Not two pages, but not twenty. It surfs between three and ten. Not as enigmatic as flash, but not as novelistic as a longer piece. Containing fully realized worlds and leaving us in short time with profound truth. How does one write a short-story of this length? What do we have to work with? What to sacrifice? What to condense? With the help of “Thank You, M’am” by Langston Hughes, “Everyday Use by Alice Walker”, and “The Leap” by Louise Erdrich, as well as color-coded annotating and thought-probing writing prompts, we will study how to use this unsung story length to yield narratives of wise insight and depth.
